Teacher: Krista Bostany
School:
Grade: Pre-K
Focus (Skill theme): Tossing and catching a ball, and hand eye coordination
Equipment: seven small Koosh balls, and six hula hoops (orange, blue, pink, purple, yellow, and green).
Protocols:
Start= “Go”
Stop = “Stop”
Stop talking and listen to directions = “peace and quiet” with hand signals.
Objective: At the end of this lesson students will be able to toss and catch a ball with themselves, and toss and catch a ball back and forth with a partner, by keeping their eye on the ball.
Learning Cues: keep your eyes on the ball, throw with two hands catch with two hands, throw with one hand catch with one, throw with one hand catch with the other.
Set Induction: Every one will be given a different colored necklace and told to find the hula-hoop that it matches. That hula-hoop will be their area for the day. “In our last class we learned how to move a ball with our feet. Today we are going to work on moving a ball with our hands. The most important thing that we need to remember today that will help us with throwing and catching a ball is to always keep your eye on the ball”. This means that you should watch the ball the whole time it is in the air until it is back in your hands.
Organizational format:
O O
O O O O
O= hula-hoop (one child per hoop)
*then hoops will be move into a circle.
Content Development:
I Tell students the main focus of the lesson and the rules and learning cues for doing it. Also explain and demonstrate each task.
E After throwing and catching with 2 hands have them do it with one hand. After having them toss the ball in the air to themselves then have them toss the ball with a partner.
R Have them practice their ball handling skills by throwing and catching to themselves to get the idea of it and practice their hand eye coordination
A Use the whole class together to play a game in a culminating event.
Culminating Event:
First the students will move their hula-hoops into a circle. I will explain that we are going to try and pass one ball around the circle and see if we can get it all the way around without dropping it. I may help them practice right and left by telling them we are going to pass it to our right/left and showing them which way that is. After they accomplish this we may do it a couple more times. If they are getting it fairly easy I may have them see how fast they can get it all the way around. I also may try using 2 balls at a time if there is time left in the lesson.
Closure:
“What did we practice today?” (ball handling/catching and throwing)
“What is one important thing to remember when you are throwing and catching a ball?” (keep your eye on it).
