Lesson Plan Format

Date:  3.7.2005

Teacher: Bryan Isbell

School: Jeter Primary School

Grade: 2nd grade

Focus (Skill Theme): Kicking

Sub-Focus (Movement Concepts): Kicking for distance and accuracy.

Equipment: 8 balls (soccer, one a very noticeable color if possible), 6 cones

Protocols: To start, say “GO!” and to stop, say “FREEZE!”

Objective: “At the end of this lesson the students will be able to kick with proper form and know the best way to kick for distance.”

Learning Cues:

  1. Step beside ball
  2. swing leg back, then through
  3. Kick with inside of foot

Set Induction: “Today, we are going to kick the ball really hard, but we’re also going to try to kick it accurately.  With both of these skills, you always need to kick the ball with the inside of your foot.  Everyone get a partner and kick the ball to them softly with the inside of your foot.”

Organizational Formats: I will have the students standing in a line (shoulder to shoulder, not single file) kicking the area and distance for the required task.  They will chase the ball down after they kick it.

Content Development:

  • Informing:  “Today we are going to learn the best way to kick a ball really far.”
  • Extending:  “Now that you’ve kicked into the open space, try to kick the ball towards the cones and see if you can hit them.”
  • Refining:  “make sure you kick the ball with the inside of your foot.”  “Always plant your non-kicking foot right beside the ball.”
  • Application:  See if they can “score” kicking the ball through 2 cones.

Culminating Activity: We will play a game where the students will have to kick their ball at a stationary ball trying to get the stationary ball to a certain point (a cone, a goal, or something like that).  A point is scored when the stationary ball reaches the target.

Closure:  “What part of your foot are you supposed to kick the ball with?”  “Where does your non-kicking foot go when you kick the ball?”

Reflection: (what did you learn from teaching this lesson?)

*TIP: Use a table format for your LP if it makes it more user friendly for you.
