Teacher: Vincent Pitts

School: Jeter

Grade: 2nd grade

Focus (Skill Theme): Gymnastics

Sub-Focus (Movement Concepts): Cartwheels, Forward rolls and Backward rolls

Equipment: 3 mats

Protocols:

                        GO = “go”

                        STOP= “stop”

Objective: “At the end of this lesson the students will be able to….” (should be achievable in 15 minute lesson) Know the cues and put them together to form the final product. Final product being a recognizable cartwheel.

Learning Cues: (brief list of most important cues in lesson; 3-4 words or less for each cue) body begins in the shape of an X. Arms at 10 and 2. Sequence of body parts are as follows: hand, hand, foot, foot. Finish like you started with arms and feet apart.

Set Induction: (scripted exactly as you will say it) Today we are going to work on some intermediate gymnastics skills. The particular skill that we are going to work on will be cartwheels and then we will combine them with the forward and backward rolls the Mr. Brandon taught you.

Organizational Formats (for ea task; if not included below w/ content, but should be easily visible)

Content Development: (Include all tasks & all task variations. Label all tasks as I, E, R, or A.)

1) Teach the proper body position without any movement (I)

2) Teach the cues and demonstrate how the cartwheel should look (I)

                        -check for understanding-

3) Assist the kids with the proper movements (E)

4) Move to the doing this from a running start with assistance (E)

5) Move to no assistance if possible (E&R)

                        -check for understanding-

Culminating Activity: (any activity including Application of skills learned and follows “Educational Game Rules.” ALL lessons must include some small-sided activity/task to apply/combine skills learned. 2 Options: (1)Have several Application Tasks within “Content Development” section. or (2)Include Application Task at end of lesson as a “Culminating Activity”).

For the culminating activity we will combine the cartwheel with the forward and backward rolls taught in the previous lesson. The kids will first do a cartwheel and then they will do either a forward or backward roll. After each kid has had a turn they will change their routine. If the did a forward roll the first time the will do a backward roll the second time, and visa versa.

Closure: (Plan some specific “thinking questions” to check for understanding. Give them management/skill FB.)

What shape is our body into begin with?

What sequence are our body parts in?

How do we place our feet when we begin?

Reflection: (what did you learn from teaching this lesson?)

*TIP: Use a table format for your LP if it makes it more user friendly for you.
