Content Development:
Children come into the room. Instant activity. (Attached after lesson)
Gather them around you at the demonstration mat. Set Induction: “I am so excited about this lesson. Have you every seen a person do this? (Do a cartwheel) Well by the end of this lesson you are going to know the basics on how to do this. First of all it is very important that you all pay close attention to what I am going to show and tell you. Then after a short example I am going to let you all do it by your selves. Are you ready to get started?”
Direction to start from:
“First we are going to use a hula hoop to help us get used to transfer our weight from our feet to our hands.”
Place hula-hoop on the ground and practice being on all fours and going side to side with our feet. The children should just get used to transferring their weight and not focus on form at this point. “Go”
Clap Twice-
The children should come over to me and if they do not I will clap again and get their attention and say “Okay a few of you did a great job listening to my clap and stopped. But we did have a few students that did not remember that two claps mean to stop what you are doing and listen to the teacher. Let’s try that again. Continue on doing what you were doing and listen to when I want you to stop.”
I will do so and continue conducting class when they have done it successfully.
“You all did a great job listening to my hand clap. I would like you all to come back over to me and I want to show you all something new.”
“You all are doing so well with this step so I want you all to try something new. Now instead of staying on all fours I want you to stand on your feet, place hands in front of you just above the ground, now place you hands on the ground and transfer your weight from side to side. Go.”
Clap Twice-
“Now I want you to kick your legs up in the air as high as you can. When I get to you it is your turn to try doing a donkey kick. Go.”
Focusing on kicking the legs so that when they get to the cartwheel they will be more comfortable doing it.
Clap Twice-
“You were just kicking your legs up in the air, this time I want you to put the past two things we have done together. Donkey kick your legs from one side to the other. Lets all work on this. (example) Go!”
Clap Twice-
Gather Students around you.
Start with your left food out first, then put your left hand out, and see how that feels. Then start with your right foot out first, then put your right hand out, and see how that feels.
“Show me which hand feels better being put down first”
“Now I am going to organize you all with pairs of people who like using that same hand” This will allow the students to be partnered up with someone who does it the same as they do.
Step 1:
Mats will be set up, folded up with feet marks on the ground and hand marks in the center of the mat.
“We are going to use this map to show us where to put our hands and feet. Now I am going to show you how to place your hands and feet to do a cartwheel. Now just watch me…Start at the X position. If you start with this hand (right) I want you to turn the same foot as your dominant hand out to where it is pointing to the mat. Next put that dominant hand on the first hand shape then your other hand on the other hand shape and put your rear leg on the other side of the mat. Now when you get to this position I want you to stop. Then slowly lift your dominant leg around and step behind the other leaving your hands on the handprints. Go back to the X position. Now you may lift your hands off of the mat. Let’s go through the same thing one more time, pay close attention. When you do this you want to look down at the mat between your hands.”
Then if there are any left hand dominant students I will go over to their mats and explain it to them with their version. The other students will go to their mats and help each other practice the correct body positioning.
I will have the children go to their station and start by using the map to show them how to move their body.
Clap Twice-
I will go through it again and allow them to ask any questions.
“Which hand do you start with and is closer to the mat? Which foot do you start with and is closer to the mat? Are these on the same side of your body? Good they should be.”
I will walk around and help the children position their body on the mats.
If all the children are getting the hand of the foot and hand maps I will go back to my demonstration mat.
Clap Twice-
Speed up the cartwheel but still make it less than normal pace. Then when they get comfortable with this have them stand with their arms up in a cartwheel position and throw there hands down to the ground before they start.
“This time I want you to do the same thing but we are going to take away the map. If you need to review the map during this new stage feel free to come over to the presentation station.”
As they become more confident and proficient let the students try a couple on the flat mat, with the assurance they may come back to the folded mat whenever they feel the need.
Start Clapping-
Have the students place their mats in one pile toward the demonstration mat.
Check for Problem
Areas:
Placing the opposite hand down first
Back leg may not be kicked up
Kicking leg not landing first
Students not looking at the mat
Spotting:
Stand facing the back of the student.
Cross arms and grasp the waist of the student.
As the student starts their cartwheel the arms will become uncrossed.
When they become inverted and re-cross as they finish.
Move sideways with the student as you spot.
