Accomplishments
The following are a few of the things we have accomplished so far:
- Created an organization of over 50 interested citizens in the various communities on the Saugahatchee Watershed. Five action-oriented committees also have been activated to ensure widespread citizen participation.
- Trained over 30 S.O.S. members in water quality monitering. Qualified personnel are now stationed at various strategic points throughout the Saugahatchee Watershed.
- Worked closely with Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Alabama Department of Environmental Management (ADEM) to successfully upgrade the Saugahatchee Creek from the lowest use classification (Agricultural & Industrial) to a higher level (Fish & Wildlife). This ensures lower thresholds of some pollutants in the watershed.
- Co-sponsored seminars dealing with erosion and sedimentation in the Saugahatchee Watershed.
- Named 1998 Group of the Year, Alabama Water Watch
