Dataset Naming Standards

Standards

  1. The first level index will be the major system indicator. A complete list of approved first level indices shall be maintained by Technical Support.

  2. The second level index shall indicate the content, the category, subsystem, or product, of the file. A complete list of approved second level indices shall be maintained by Technical Support.

  3. The third level shall indicate the scope of usage. The following shall be valid codes for this index:

  4. The fourth level indices and beyond are application defined and are subject to the requirements of the application, with the exception that the last level index of VSAM datasets should match the DDNAME/CICS FCT entry name and the data and index components should match the cluster name with the .DATA or .INDEX extension.

  5. Backup copies of datasets will be given the same name as the source dataset with an extension of .BKUP. Where multiple backups are required, the extension will be in the form of .BKUPnn, where nn will be the arbitrarily assigned two-digit number.

  6. Members of generation data groups will be assigned the name specified above with the .G0000V00 suffix assigned by the system.

  7. Models for generation data groups will be given the name of the generation data group plus the extension .MODEL.

  8. A recommended list of last level indices for source and load module libraries will be developed and maintained by Technical Support.

  9. Datasets which have naming constraints imposed by vendor requirements or conventions are exempted from the full naming standard but should come as close as possible within the specified constraints.

A first level of PCP40, PCP41 or PCP42 indicates production, all others are test datasets.
