- Abstract: In many ecological systems, species persistence is closely linked to their reproduction rates. Additionally, maturation—the process by which individuals grow and develop throughout their life cycle—plays a vital role in determining survival. Together, these factors can significantly influence a species' fate, shifting it from persistence to extinction. As a result, there is both practical and ecological value in developing mathematical frameworks that can accurately evaluate the impact of reproduction and maturation rates on species survival. In this talk, we examine how large reproduction and/or maturity rates may affect species dynamics. In particular, we will investigate the stability and asymptotic profiles of positive steady-states to a two-stage structured diffusive population model. From the biological viewpoint, our analysis indicates that a high reproduction rate consistently supports species survival. However, extinction may occur if the juvenile maturation rate is high while the adult reproduction rate is relatively weak.
