Course Description:
Differentiation and integration of algebraic and transendental functions with applications.
Textbook:
Essenttial Calculus: Early Transcendentals, Second edition by J. Stewart.
Coverage: We will cover
- Chapter 1 -- Functions and limits
- Chapter 2 -- Derivatives
- Chapter 3 -- Inverse functions
- Chapter 4 -- Applications of differentiation
- Chapter 5 -- Integrals
Prerequisite: Grade C or better in Precalculus (Math 127 or 128 at UNLV) or ACT score at least 28 or SAT score at least 630.
Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course, student will be able to
- Determine limits of a variety of functions;
- Apply knowledge of limits to determine whether a function is continuous at a point, and to determine a derivative of a function by definition;
- Differentiate a variety of functions explicitly or implicitly;
- Apply knowledge of derivatives to solve relative rates problems and optimization problems;
- Apply knowledge of derivatives to find max, min, inflection points of functions and sketch graphs;
- Evaluate definite and indefinite integrals;
- Use definite integrals to determine the area btween a curve and the x-axis.
Note: The syllabus was created in Aug. 2018, and it is subject to change during the semester.
Homework: Homework will be assigned after each class meeting and due every Friday before the discussion class. Only part of the problem set (randomly chosen) will be graded, however you will receive some credits for completing all homework problems.
Quiz: Quiz will be given at the beginning of the discussion class on each Friday.
Attendence: You are expected to attend class regularly. You are responsible for all the materials presented and all the announcements made, if any, at each lecture.
Tutoring: There are two tutoring opportunities for you:
Tests and Final: There will be 2 tests and a cumulative final exam. Failure to take an exam during the scheduled class time will result in a score of zero for that exam. There will be no make-up exam except for well-documented reasons such as a medical emergency. Scientific (non-programmable and non-graphing) calculators are allowed during exams.

There will be Homework (15%), Quiz (15%), two tests (20%+20%) and the final exam (30%).

ny student missing class quizzes, examinations, or any other class or lab work because of observance of religious holidays shall be given an opportunity during that semester to make up missed work. Incomplete Grades:
The grade of I -- Incomplete -- can be granted when a student has satisfactorily completed three-fourths of course work for that semester/session but for reason(s) beyond the student's control, and acceptable to the instructor, cannot complete the last part of the course, and the instructor believes that the student can finish the course without repeating it. The incomplete work must be made up before the end of the following regular semester for undergraduate courses. Graduate students receiving "I" grades in 500-, 600-, or 700-level courses have up to one calendar year to complete the work, at the discretion of the instructor. If course requirements are not completed within the time indicated, a grade of F will be recorded and the GPA will be adjusted accordingly. Students who are fulfilling an Incomplete do not register for the course but make individual arrangements with the instructor who assigned the I grade.
Tutoring:
The Academic Success Center (ASC) provides tutoring and academic assistance for all UNLV students taking UNLV courses. ne-on-one or small group assistance with writing is available free of

consultations are sometimes available, students with appointments will receive priority assistance.

By policy, faculty and staff should e-mail students' Rebelmail accounts only. Rebelmail is UNLV's official e-mail system for students.
