COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course is designed to introduce teachers to the technological tools that can enhance mathematics teaching and learning, with an emphasis on mathematical problem solving and classroom applications.

COURSE OBJECTIVES. By the end of this course, students will:

·       Be able to apply a range of technological tools to solving problems, both within mathematics and as applied to other disciplines.

·       Understand how technology impacts both how mathematics is taught and what mathematics is taught, and be aware of issues surrounding its appropriate use.

·       Be able to effectively evaluate software resources and Internet resources.

·       Be able to use technological tools to support instruction, including presentation software, mathematical word processing, and basic web page development.

COURSE MATERIALS

·       Advanced graphing calculator (TI-86 or better)

·       Zip disk

·       Principles and Standards for School Mathematics, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, 2000. (Available at http://standards.nctm.org)

Grades will be assigned on a 10%-scale. Note that all assignments (unless otherwise noted) should reflect professional standards of communication, including correct grammar, spelling, and style, and proper use of citations.

CLASS POLICY STATEMENTS:

Attendance. Each student is expected to attend all classes as scheduled, including lab sessions held off campus. Excused absences for activities in the schools require preapproval by the instructor or university approval as specified in the Tiger Cub. Unexcused absences will result in a lowering of the student's final grade.

Academic honesty. All portions of the Auburn University Honesty Code (Title 1208) found in the Tiger Cub will apply in this class.

Accommodations for students with special needs. Students who need special accommodations should make an appointment to discuss the Accommodation Memo during regularly-scheduled office hours as soon as possible.
