Fine Carpenters

Fine Carpenters

by David B. Swanger

Ah ye fine carpenters bold
With all tools of iron and will
Bring hearts and minds and hands
To brow of yon rocky hill.

Bring wood from the mill and plane
Lay down your brick and your lime
For the house that you build
At the brow of yon hill
Is for one who is nearing her time.

Plumb walls with the bob and line
And shape the roof with the square
And build a coal-stove flue
To warm the October air.

See there how sweetly she waits
Heavy with child and with grace
And the child that she bears
At this time of such cares
Bears the mark of a little known race.

Ah ye fine carpenters bold
Make haste now to ply your skill
Bring hearts and minds and hands
To brow of yon borning hill.
