STEM Education through the Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project

Lignin PeroxidaseWith respect to teaching students about the amazing molecular systems that underlie biological function, I have had the opportunity to participate with the Alabama Prison Arts + Education Project (APA+EP) in bringing STEM programming to Alabama prisons.  All evidence indicates that educational opportunities have a highly positive impact on the prisoners who receive them. I have participated in SPARKs lecture series.  In these series a group of faculty from the College of Sciences and Mathematics and the College of Agriculture present talks on their respective areas of expertise.  The usual model has one faculty member presenting each week. It has been a great honor to participate in this program, and I have greatly enjoyed my interactions with these students.
