The Natural Approach

1. What is unique about this approach?

2. Do you think exposure to comprehensible input is the only route to developing spontaneous speech competence?

3. Do you think comprehensible input plus a low affective filter is sufficient for acquisition to take place?

4. The natural approach is intended to help beginning L2 learners become intermediates. To what extend do you think this method can be used for intermediate and advanced students?

Suggestopedia

1. Probably very few of us are going to adopt suggestopedia as a method of in our daily classroom teaching. But it may be of some heuristic value. What (ideas and/or techniques) in this method do you think we may be able to incorporate in a conventional L2 classroom?

Focus on Form

A. Major Claims:

1. Comprehensible Input is not sufficient for the acquisition of some linguistic forms (the CI insufficient claim).
2. The students' focal attention to the target form is necessary for acquisition to take place (the noticing claim).
3. Noticing can be achieved by making the target form in the input salient (the input enhancement claim).
4. Different strategies can be used to make the target form salient.

4. How to make the target form salient? Task Requirement: Ss have to notice the presence of certain forms in order to successfully complete a task. Physical appearance: e.g., underline the target form, use different color, font. Explicit/Implicit correction or explanation during or after the completion of a task
3. Focal attention is achieved by making the target form in the input salient.

Input Enhancement
2. The learners' focal attention to the target form is necessary for acquisition.

Noticing
1. CI is not sufficient for acquiring some linguistic forms.

Comprehensible Input Acquisition

B. Major research questions

1. How to focus -- what strategies can be used to draw the learners' attention to the target form while maintaining a meaning-oriented task?

2. On what form -- what forms require noticing in order to be acquired?
