AUTHOR'S NOTE AND VITA

AUTHOR'S NOTE

This is as close a representation of my thesis as I could arrange. Among the many formatting changes that I made to fit this into HTML format were, dropping the page numbers (not needed), rearranging the tables in the Appendix (a competent browser seems to format them far better than Microsoft Works did, and I didn't need to fuss with finding the proper column-width), and of course, adding this author's note. The graphs were redone in color (the hard copy turned in to the Graduate School had to be black and white), or rather simply cut-and-pasted between the Works Spreadsheet and LView Pro. The first map was simply used as color instead of reduced to black and white, while the second map sadly was done by me in black and white.

My thesis hard copy did not include an acknowledgments section (allowed), or a dedication (not allowed). I would like to take this more public (hopefully) forum to publically thank my committee, Dr. Gary Zuk, Dr. Caleb Clark, and Dr. Paul M. Johnson, all of Auburn University, for their constructive suggestions and their patience whilst I struggled with putting this thesis out. I would also like to acknowledge the contributions of the folks on the USENET group sci.military.naval. Also on the list are the many faithful folk at Auburn First Baptist. They kept me sane through all of this. And finally, my deepest gratitude goes to my parents for bringing me into this world and showing me how to pursue understanding of this world.
