CTSE 7970-002, Summer 2001

General advice

    1. Use styles. See the pull-down menu at the top left of the window. This includes built-in styles for headings and so forth.
    2. Use lists. Highlight the items in your list and hit either the “number” or “bullet” icon at the middle of the top of the window to generate either numbered or bulleted lists.
    3. Enter an accurate title; see “Page Title” under the Format menu.
    4. Be careful with colors. They can make your page unattractive and even hard to read.

Including pictures. This can be very helpful in making a presentation easier to understand. Directions for Macintosh follow:

  1. Get the picture you want to display on the screen.
  2. Hold down the Shift and Apple keys, and hit "4". You will then be given a cross-hairs; draw a rectangle over the part of the screen you want.
  3. The image file will be titled "Picture N" (where N is an integer) in the root folder of the hard drive. Find it, and double-click on it. This will open up the picture in SimpleText.
  4. Use the cross-hairs to select the exact image you want to use, and “Copy” (from File menu) the image.
  5. Go to location in Composer where you want the image to appear, and “Paste” (from File menu) it in.
  6. It will ask you for a name for the file, ending in ".jpg". Pick a good name that will be clear and is not likely to be used in the future. Also, be sure it is saved to your Zip disk or wherever else you are saving files.
  7. When you publish your page, Composer will automatically upload the images for that page. See the bottom of the window you are given when you publish.

Including equations.
