- Example of use: Put a small version of a graph or image on the page. Then add a link to a page with a larger image.
More on links
Navigating within a page. There are two parts to the process.
- First, you need to add an “anchor” to the place you want to be able to go. Put the cursor in that place, then “Insert... Target”. Add an appropriate name. (NOTE: Netscape 6 has an anchor icon and calls these anchors, which is more standard.)
- Second, you need to add a link. Enter the text, and click on the “link” icon. Under URL, enter “#name-of-anchor”.
- This only works within a page. To get to a specific location in a different page, give the usual URL and append “#name-of-anchor”, as in “index.html#top”.
- Examples of use:
- Define an anchor at the top of a long page page (called “top”). Add a “back to top” link at the bottom of that page.
- Provide links to subsections of a long page at the top of the page. You could repeat these links at the end of each section, along with a link back to the top of the page.
Adding links to other kinds of files. You can add a link to other documents, such as an Excel spreadsheet. However, be aware, that this may not work particularly well in some browser or computers, although it does tend to work well in Internet Explorer with Windows. So you may want to add a warning!
- Give your document a good web name (no spaces of special symbols, etc.).
- If you are using a Mac, it is important to include a standard file extension. For example, Excel documents should end in “.xls”.
- Put the document on your zip disk (or other storage medium) in the same directory or folder as you saved the page to which you are adding the link.
- Set up the text for the link and hit the “link” icon. Under URL, you may need to type the name of the file; it may not show up in the list of files.
- When publishing the page:
- Click on the button that says “All files in this page’s folder”, then click on the file(s) to which you want to link, to prevent uploading the entire disk.
- That should do it! Clicking on the link just may open your file!
