Collection Production: Building Digital Audio and Video Libraries
Like books
and CDs on traditional library shelves, digital libraries collections
can simply be archives of materials. Rather than shelves, the virtual
library contains endless lists and databases of information. On the
other hand, libraries can also be active, vibrant environments. In traditional
libraries this may take the form of smiling librarians, colorful displays,
and promotional activities. Digital library have the opportunity to
be dynamic environments for information exploration.
Enthusiastic librarians have always been at the core of a dynamic library. How will we replicate this interface as more and more of our interactions occur in a mediated environment? The key will be the design of exciting interfaces. Like children who browse the shelf for the most colorful, skinny book to read, patrons are attracted to dynamic environments that are easy to use.
