The Southeastern Conference on Linguistics will be held at the Zehmer Hall Conference Center at the University of Virginia.
Zehmer Hall is located in the heart of the beautiful University of Virginia campus
and is only a few minutes drive from the Charlottesville Downtown Mall, a collection of shops, boutiques, outdoor markets, cafes, and restaurants.

To do in Charlottesville:
Michie Tavern:
Michie Tavern is of the oldest homesteads in Virginia. It was built by John Michie circa 1784. Now, the tavern offers tours, and a colonial
lunch served family-style with traditional recipes. The tavern also hosts a general store and a museum gift shop. Michie Tavern is located
only half a mile before Monticello on Route 53.
Charlottesville Downtown Mall:
Charlottesville Downtown Mall is an urban park which hosts over 120 shops and 30 restaurants. It serves as the center of Charlottesville nightlife and cultural
activities. The Mall hosts the Virginia Discovery Museum, as well as concert spaces and venues.

About fifty miles from Charlottesville, this National Historical Park rests on the location where Robert E. Lee's Army of Northern Virginia would surrender to Union soldiers in 1865. The park and the courthouse, including the McLean House where the two generals met, are open daily to the public.

This battlesite is approximentally seventy miles from Charlottesville. The battlesite marks the place where General "Stonewall"
Jackson was fatally wounded by the accidental fire of his own men.The battle was fought from April 30 to May 6, 1863.
Colonial Home Tours:
Ash Lawn-Highland:
293-9539 Located only fifteen minutes from Charlottesville, this estate was the home of James Monroe. The home is open daily, 9 am - 6 pm. The estate charges a 9 dollar fee. The estate is also home of the Ash-Lawn Opera Festival.

Monticello

By far the most popular tourist site in the area, Monticello was Thomas Jefferson's home. Take guided tours of the estate, or self-guided tours of Jeffersons's immaculately-kept gardens. The estate's slave quarters are also open to tour. Open 8 am - 5 pm. Fee is 14 dollars.

This was the lifelong home of James Madison, fourth U.S. President. The estate was first settled in 1723. Open 9:30 am- 5:30 pm.The grounds are home to the famous Montpelier steeplechase. Fee is 11 dollars for adults.

Arranging Group Tours Through SECOL
If you have a suggestion for an evening or daytime group trip that you would like to make open for SECOL members, please contact Dr. Robin Sabino. We can send out emails notifying members that a group trip is being offered, and will make your contact information available to interested parties, so that you can arrange travel and carpool information. We can also offer your trip publicity through the SECOL schedule and event listings leaflet that participants will receive upon arrival.
If you want to arrange a social event, please notify Dr. Sabino at least a month before the conference begins. Please note that, while SECOL is happy to help publicize your event, we cannot make meal or transportation arrangements. We also cannot reimburse your groups in the even of inclement weather or scheduling difficulties.
Suggested group trips may include: an evening gallery hopping, an afternoon trip to Mitchie Tavern, a daytrip to Monticello, or dinner at one of the Charlottesville Mall's many restaurants and cafes.
